Instead of driving uninsured, Mississippi motorists can obtain an affordably priced policy by using OnlineAutoInsurance.com

Online PR News – 10-February-2011 –Uninsured motorists have been a perennial problem in the state of Mississippi, where it’s been estimated that more than 1 in 4 drivers who are on the road lack coverage. In order to encourage more motorists to get in compliance with the law by purchasing a policy, a group of state representatives have introduced legislation that would set up a car insurance verification program to help identify drivers who lack coverage.

In addition to establishing the electronic verification system, the bill would require car owners to get proof of insurance and present it in order to receive a motor vehicle license tag. Failure to carry such proof in an insured vehicle is already punishable by a fine of $500 and a one-year license suspension.

The proposed verification program would be set up electronically, with insurance companies in the state transmitting policyholder information to the database regularly. This information would then be made available to law enforcement officers and any other parts of the government that are authorized by the Insurance Department.

Police would have access the data in real time from the field, allowing them to check on a driver’s insured status through the database when they are pulled over for other traffic violations. This would hamper the plans of any Mississippians planning to circumvent financial responsibility laws by purchasing a policy, obtaining a proof of coverage card and then dropping the policy.

Aside from being a tool for police to track down uninsured drivers, state regulators would also conduct random checks in the database and send out inquiries to those who appear to lack coverage.
