Our State magazine examines the past, present and future of Rehder's Florist.

Online PR News – 04-March-2011 –Our State magazine recently featured Wilmington-based Rehder Florist, North Carolina’s oldest operating flower hub. In its March 2011 issue, Our State explores the rich history of Rehder’s – from its important role in past Azalea Festivals to its reputation as the Cape Fear region’s celebration center.

Julia’s Florist acquired Rehder’s in 2005. The local staple from yesteryear currently operates out of the Julia’s shop at the corner of Kerr Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard. In fact, owner Dana Cook said many of Rehder’s original clients still use the florist to mark special occasions.

The article in Our State centers on Cook’s discovery of a box of old photographs and newspaper clippings left in the Rehder’s Florist attic. The mish-mash of weathered images and words chronicled the people, as well as events, that made Southeastern NC what it is today.

Contributing writer Amy Hotz weaves the uncovering of the treasure chest with stories from Stanley Rehder, who ran the florist with his brother. The article even recalls Rehder’s interview with Barbara Walters on the “Today” show – an appearance that found him talking everything carnivorous plants. Wilmington photographer Millie Holloman illustrates the article with portraits of Cook and Rehder to capture the long-standing history.

Currently, Cook is considering opening a downtown location that will be called Rehder Florist. “We don’t want the Rehder name to die,” she says in the Our State article. “We think it’s a treasure.”
