Watershed Protection Project in Burundi will help in strengthening the food security by improving the soil.
Online PR News – 18-March-2011 –17th March’ 2011: The African Development Fund (ADF) Board of Directors has sanctioned a grant of US$14.61 million(9 million Units of Account, that will focus mainly towards safeguarding the watersheds, improving and developing agro-livestock production & forestry and enhancing project area’s rural incomes. This recent campaign of the ADF in Burundi will help in strengthening the food security by reinstating the soil.
The Watershed Management Project (PABV) will comprise of the following activities:
Soil and water conservation and planning;
Training for 2,000 smallholders including 40% women in agro-forestry and erosion control;
Training for 46,800 smallholders including 35% women in agro-forestry activities;
Study trips for 50 smallholders and officers of the Department of the forestry;
Creation of approximately 5,550 ha of Community and/or private woodlots.
Construction of 600,000 metres of erosion control works according to contour lines;
Implementation with the rural populations of ten simple community woodlot management plans;
Creation of 600 ha of farms for food crop production, market gardening, fruit growing and bee-keeping;
Finalization of the forest policy document and the forest Code;
Creation and upkeep of 15,000 ha State plantations improvement of 5,800 ha natural pastures;
Planting of 3,000 ha of multi-purpose fodder species;
Development of fodder species and diversification of production;
Training courses for 20 officials in forest inventory and management and 35 officials and technicians in agro forestry.
The final dates for submitting the bids will be on 31st May’2011.
