Mobile Phones: O2 Increases Network Spend for Smartphone Coverage
The demand for O2 smartphones and the drain of network data has seen O2 increase its network spend for smartphone coverage in the build-up to the Christmas period.
Online PR News – 19-November-2009 – – The high concentration of smartphones in certain areas of the O2 network has seen the company extend its network spend by a further £100 million. These additions will be designed to accelerate the network in time for the Christmas holidays.
A team of O2 senior technology managers have been given the go-ahead to drive ahead these plans. This Network Performance Improvement Plan includes a £30 million increase for the fourth quarter of 2009, rising to £100 million in early 2010. On top of this, around 40 new network site builds are to be installed in and around London in preparation for the festive and New Year season.
The reason for the significant increased strain on the O2 network is attributed to a growth in data use, with the number of smartphone (http://www.foneshop.com) users rising every week. The iPhone 3G S (http://www.foneshop.com/apple) and the newly-unveiled Palm Pre are the two biggest-selling handsets on the O2 network.
Further detail in the plan has been revealed, with the upgrading of cell sites and the acceleration of investment in areas of high data usage by growing its access data network that has naturally grown in demand.
O2 chief technology officer, Derek McManus, said: “World class smartphones (http://www.foneshop.com) have brought about an unprecedented demand on mobile data networks. Data on our network has increased 20-fold in the last year alone. As a result, we have recently experienced some isolated pressures in London where there is the highest concentration of smartphone users.
“In the last two years we have invested £500m in our network. We are now aggressively accelerating our network growth programme, increasing our spend by hundreds of millions over the next few years to ensure we build significant headroom for the future.”
