YardGopher is the brainchild of Asheville, NC resident, Taylor Nations who came up with the idea from his own experience struggling to sell furniture worth hundreds for less than 50 dollars. He thought, “There has to be a better way to get the word out to yard sale shoppers who would be thrilled to find these pieces at these great prices!” He knew many shoppers were paying twice as much for items of lower quality from stores in the area. He also realized, the problem was that the right people didn’t know what was available at each garage sale. For most people, the money saved at a garage sale isn’t worth driving all around town in the hopes of finding what they are looking for. As a result, there had to be people struggling to sell high-quality items for pennies on the dollar at yard sales all over the country. The problem was, the people who wanted those items had no idea they were there.
If he could find a way to bring the right customer to the right product, it would be a win-win situation! Thus, the searchable, interactive, and easy to use website was born!
YardGopher.com is still in ‘beta’ mode with 50 cities listed and more features being added all the time, such as the ability to set an alert when an item is posted for sale at a local garage sale. The website is free and makes it easy to find specific yard sale items. For example, visitors searching for bikes in their local area can use the search box to type in ‘bikes’, select their city and go. The website will then list all garage sales which have bikes for sale. Buyers can also browse by category such as ‘recreation’. Sellers may post generic listings for free while those selling more high-priced items such as furniture, bikes or stereo systems would benefit from using the ‘premium listing’ feature, (which costs under $1 per listing). This would get the seller’s listing at the top of the page and in front of more potential customers.
