Online PR News – 22-April-2011 –A new report from the Insurance Research Council (IRC) shows that the estimated rate of American motorists who hit the road without proper car insurance in 2009 was equal to the rate estimated in 2007, despite expectations that it would increase. The national rate posted a small increase between 2007 and 2008 but came back down by 2009. The IRC estimates that about 13.8 percent of American drivers lacked coverage at that time.
But a handful of states — such as Tennessee, Georgia and North Dakota — bucked the national trend and posted increases in the uninsured motorist rate between 2007 and 2009.
The new edition of the IRC study shows that the proportion of drivers in the state who fail to meet basic Tennessee minimum auto insurance requirements has gone from an estimated 20 percent in 2007 up to 24 percent in 2009.
It’s possible that the news of the estimated increase could influence attitudes toward a handful of insurance-related bills awaiting action in the state legislature.
Currently, bills are circulating through the Tennessee government that would limit the recovery rights of uninsured drivers, would require motorists to show proof of coverage before registering an auto, would require police to ask for proof of a policy during traffic stops, and would increase the fines for failure to show such proof.
None of these bills has made it out of committee yet.
