Dry Tortugas National Park Constructing New Docks for Visiting Day Trip Vessels to Fort Jefferson

Online PR News – 21-May-2011 –The US Army Corp of Engineers is constructing new piers and docking on Garden Key which are expected to be completed at the end of May. The new piers will provide dockage for vessels making day trips to the Dry Tortugas National Park. Intended for boats not traveling with a dinghy, the four new boat slips will allow park visitors to enjoy the beaches and snorkeling at Garden Key and explore Fort Jefferson.

Scheduled completion will make the national park's new docks available for the busy summer months when small craft take advantage of calmer seas to make the 70 mile trip. Please note that the former docks used by private vessels have been permanently closed. Until the new docks are completed, the Dry Tortugas Ferry dock is available to private vessels. Time restrictions apply, contact the National Park Service for more information.

Summer is the busiest season at Dry Tortugas National Park. Visitors come to snorkel in the warmer waters enjoying visibility of the reef not seen the rest of the year. Summer brings more visitors to the Dry Tortugas than any other months of the year. Clear skies and warm water temperatures make a visit to Fort Jefferson especially enjoyable.
