VLife Publication award is an initiative to encourage research using modelling tools in pharma and biotech, to improve quality of research using modelling tools

• There were 32 participants from all over country for this competition. Selected papers report significant research in the area of antipsychotic disease, HIV and tuberculosis were submitted by the participants
• Shashikant Bhandari, Kailash Bothara and Ashwini Madgulkar team, AISSMS College of pharmacy, Pune, bagged the second place at the awards.
Karuppiah Kanagarajadurai, Ramanathan Sowdhamini and team, National Center for Biological Sciences (a part of TIFR), Bangalore secured the first place at the awards. City-based team of AISSMS College of pharmacy made Puneites proud by securing the second position at the VLife awards.
The winners for the awards are listed below in order of the positions secured:
1. Karuppiah Kanagarajadurai, Ramanathan Sowdhamini and team, National Center for Biological Sciences (a part of TIFR), Bangalore. Dr. Sowdhamini’s group is actively involved in cutting edge research in structural bioinformatics, protein domain super families, computational Genomics. This group has pioneering contributions in computational approaches in protein science.
2. Shashikant Bhandari, Kailash Bothara and team, AISSMS College of pharmacy, Pune. This group is involved in research of HIV apart from regular teaching activity. AISSMS College of pharmacy is among the premier colleges in pharmacy domain.
3. Jointly awarded to Payel Ghosh, Manish Bagchi and team, Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata and Arati Garg, GPS Raghava and team, Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh. Dr. Bagachi’s group is working on designing of newer tuberculostatic, anticancer and other drugs using computational tools and Dr. Raghava’s group is involved in pioneering research in Protein Structure Prediction Gene Prediction and Genome Annotation and Prediction of T Cell epitopes.
An independent committee was formed having representation from both industry as well as academia. It should be noted that all research papers that were considered were already published papers, implying that independent reviews of this work had already happened. The selection criteria was importance of the problem chosen, approach chosen by investigator to solve the problem, results obtained and presentation of research work in the research papers. The award was presented at the hands of chief guest Dr Sourav Pal, director, National Chemical Laboratory, Pune.

“Our team of five people worked day and night on this research for last one year. It is satisfying that our efforts are well recognised by VLife. I hope our research will lead to discovery of new and more effective drug for anti-psychotic diseases”, said first prize winner K. Kanagrajdurai.

Dr Shashikant Bhandari, member of second award winning team from Pune said, “This VLife award is an encouraging push for us. With the support of Vlife softwares made available to us we can surely explore into new avenues of drug discovery with the use of computational technology. This technology enables us to do optimum research in minimum time and it is affordable too. ”

This scientific award is one of the first of its kind in India and we feel proud to have been able to institute this award which will be given every year from 2011 to promote innovative use of computational technologies.”
