OAI: Comparison Shows Gender's Impact on Oklahoma Auto Insurance Rates Contact Information Share and Connect OnlineAutoInsurance.com looked at 1,000 sample quotes provided by state regulators to quantify the impact of gender on car insurance rates in Oklahoma. Online PR News – 20-October-2011 –An analysis of sample Oklahoma car insurance rates provided by state regulators shows insurers may charge males an average of 12 percent more when compared with females who are buying the same coverage, according to a new FAQ published by OnlineAutoInsurance.com. The premium comparison included sample Oklahoma auto insurance premiums for male and female versions of five different driver profiles, which in effect isolated the gender component in the pricing process. Nineteen insurers supplied rates. The analysis showed that the age of the driver played a major role in the size of the surcharge for being male. While the 36-, 55- and 70-year-old male profiles paid on average only slightly more when compared with females of the same age (between zero and 2.3 percent more), the male 16- and 21-year-old profiles paid substantially more. At 21, a male Oklahoman may pay an average of 26 percent more for a policy compared with females of the same age and coverage profile. And at 16, the average gap is more than twice as large: 35 percent. Insurers’ pricing policies higher on average for men is no new trend, and it doesn’t happen only in Oklahoma. Only five states—Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania—have regulations that prohibit insurers from varying car insurance rates based on the policyholder’s gender. In all the others, it’s fair game. The reason insurance companies charge male drivers more is that statistics show they get into crashes at a higher rate than females.
