A free-online tool helps overcome the eternal problem of fridges running hot in caravans, campers, trailers and recreational vehicles.

And there’s nothing worse than when the beer is hot.

Caravan and camping fridges are notorious for running hot and the biggest reason why is because their connecting electrical wires are under-rated.

For those with a small amount of know how, a new online tool now provides a way to calculate how to overcome the problem.

Fridges, TVs, water pumps and lighting all require power, which is usually delivered via low-voltage circuits from batteries and solar panels when the recreational vehicle is parked up for free camping.

These low voltage circuits often contain wiring that is too small, usually to save costs or through lack of technical expertise. Devices such as battery chargers, batteries, inverters and fridges are particularly sensitive to voltage drops experienced in long runs of under rated cable. They simply will not work efficiently and that can affect the temperature of your beer.

Tow Care, a Brisbane mobile RV service provider, has released a free caravan wire size calculator for professional and DIY installers of caravan electrical equipment. Now a tool exists to calculate the correct size wire to be deployed inside the RV.

A battery-charging circuit, for example, could extend from the front of the tow vehicle to the back of the caravan, a distance of up to 10m (approx 33 feet) or more. Choosing the wrong size cable could mean that your new battery will not charge correctly and could prematurely fail.
