OnlineAutoInsurance.com: Maryland Drivers Need Comp Coverage for Deer-Vehicle Accident Protection Maryland officials are cautioning motorists in the state to watch for deer on the roadways during November, one of the times of the year when the animals are most active. Online PR News – 17-November-2011 –A recently issued reminder from Maryland officials about keeping an especially close eye out for deer on roadways this month should also prompt motorists to make sure they are financially protected in the event they run into one of the antlered animals, according to Online Auto Insurance (OAI). Authorities say drivers are rarely found to have been at fault in deer-vehicle crashes, but colliding with one of the critters will likely mean the driver will want to file a claim for damages under a Maryland auto insurance policy. Officials with Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources say the chances of an unexpected encounter with a deer are greatest during November, when the critters are traveling more because of mating and migration patterns. According to the Insurance Information Institute, there are more than 1.5 million deer-vehicle crashes nationwide each year, resulting in more than a billion dollars in vehicle damage, 150 fatalities and at least 1.5 million deceased deer. Drivers in Maryland have about a 1-in-120 chance of colliding with a deer within the next year, according to a State Farm report based on the insurer’s claims data. With nearly 32,700 deer-vehicle crashes in Maryland in the 12 months that ended June 30, researchers ranked motorists in the state 13th most likely nationwide for a run-in with a deer. In light of those odds, OAI advises motorists to think about buying an auto policy that includes comprehensive coverage. Unlike other types of insurance, comprehensive coverage protects consumers against losses caused by deer and other animals, in addition to damages that result from fire, flooding and other weather-related events, theft and vandalism. Comprehensive is not legally required in any state, except as part of a vehicle loan agreement, and it will likely involve spending a little more than you would for a bare-bones policy, but it could turn out to be a good investment for anyone who is unlucky enough to collide with a deer.
