Back from a two-year hiatus, the 2012 Passat is taking the top honors among 35 new vehicle offerings. Motor Trend has been handing out this award for the past 62 years and all eligible vehicles were submitted to tests that include on-track and real-world driving evaluations.
“Volkswagen is extremely proud to receive this honor,” said Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen of America. “This recognition from Motor Trend is a testament to the engineering integrity of the Passat and validates our strategy of providing a US-built, German engineered mid-size sedan at a price in the heart of the mid-size segment.”
The German engineered model is made exclusively for the American market. On sale since September 2011, the Passat is built in Chattanooga, Tennessee at Volkswagen’s factory. The VW Passat is also the eighth Volkswagen vehicle to be selected as the Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The 2012 model is a mid-size five passenger sedan that is larger than the previous version of the car. It offers class-leading rear-seat legroom, standard Bluetooth as well as automatic dual zone climate control. It also comes standard with Electronic Stability Control and is available in three powertrains.
In its lineup, VW is an environmentally friendly car that offers a clean diesel option and The Passat is the only midsize sedan with this option. It is able to get as much as 31 miles per gallon in the city and 43 miles per gallon on the highway in this 6-speed manual transmission diesel model.
