Online PR News – 06-December-2011 –Ever wondered why a trampoline allows for a really high jump after impact with the canvas? The trampoline does not absorb the energy exerted, rather it expands then snaps back to its original shape thrusting the user into the air. What does this have to do with BBCOR? Bat-Ball Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR) measures energy loss at the impact point rather than the speed of the ball after it has been hit by the bat, which was a primary factor in the previous Ball Exit Speed Ratio (BESR) standard. Before the BBCOR standard was announced, the “trampoline effect” of the bats were not taken into consideration. Non-wood Baseball Bats were made from materials that allowed the bats to contract when hit by a ball. It was discovered that the longer these bats were being used, the better they performed due to the breakdown of the materials being used to manufacture the bats. With this information, players would use an illegal technique known as “rolling” their bats to break them in faster to get maximum performance value quicker.
“The new BBCOR standard evens the playing field and makes non-wood bats perform similarly to wood bats”, said Jim Garner, President and Owner of The SportStation. The manufactures of BBCOR bats will now need to produce their bats with a thicker inner wall to reduce the “trampoline effect” of their bats. In doing so, this will lower bat performance by five to six percent. This will allow for balance among all players. With a slower Batted Ball Speed (BBS), as a result of the BBCOR standard, this will help address some of the safety issues that are prevalent in today’s games.
This new standard, while it will affect your team stats and personal stats, was designed to keep a uniform batting standard between wood bats and non-wood bats. This also creates a new learning opportunity because while these new bats will not make a better hitter, it forces the batter to focus on accuracy and swing speed.
“There are still several advantages to using aluminum or composite bats.” Said Jim Garner, “While being more cost effective than purchasing wood bats, the physics of the aluminum and composite bats still come into play. Lower Moment of Inertia (MOI) allows for a quicker swing speed. Also, the batter can wait a little longer to swing the bat, and the added maneuverability of the bat will allow for corrections to be made easier during the swing.”
There is currently no requirement for manufacturers to add the MOI figures to the baseball bats. This creates a problem for players to decide on which bat will work best for them.
