A study released by the FDA states that electronic cigarettes deliver nicotine. There has been recent controversy regarding whether or not e-cigarettes deliver nicotine, and going back to a report published by the FDA in May 2009, it is stated that they do. Online PR News – 11-February-2010 –During last year's study, the FDA's Division of Pharmaceutical Analysis (DPA) evaluated two brands of electronic cigarettes for nicotine content and also for tobacco specific impurities. Their research indicated that the electronic cigarette cartridges did contain nicotine. Quoted text, directly from the FDA's published report states, "Nicotine is Present in Both Products" and "The cartridges labeled “high” delivered more nicotine..." These quotes, which are taken directly from the FDA report, suggest that the FDA's research scientists believe that the electronic cigarette "delivers" nicotine. A recent press release by CNN, claims that a Dr. Thomas Eissenberg did a study on the electronic cigarette and found that they do not deliver nicotine. The report is not currently accessible by anyone and no further information besides a couple of press releases is available. The information released by Dr. Thomas Eissenberg claims that the study was done on 16 people. These subjects smoked their regular brand of cigarettes and then in another session smoked electronic cigarettes. When smoking cigarettes, Dr.Eissenberg found that they had a "substantial and significant" increase in heart rate, he did not find the same significant increase in heart rate with electronic cigarettes. He also claims that the cigarette users had a larger increase of "plasma nicotine" which he did not find with the electronic cigarette users. This information conflicts with the report that was done by the FDA in May 2009, the FDA states that they do deliver nicotine, which is the FDA's main reason that they want regulatory authority over them. The actual scientific report by Dr.Eissenberg should be available in the February print issue of the journal Tobacco Control. We asked Susan, a e-cigarette user, her opinion on the matter and here is what she had to say: " Regardless of anything, The ecigarette is freeing more people from their burning tobacco addiction than any smoking cessation product ever made. I'm going to stick with the electronic cigarette, it's been working great for me since day one, and I am still smoke free. I would also like to think that the e-cigarette not causing a "substantial and significant" increase in heart rate(like smoking does) is a good thing and not something to frown about! Because it works! It cures my cravings, and that's all I know!"
