City of Austin donates $150,000 to brain injury disability advocacy organization to build wheelchair accessible fishing pier in downtown Austin. Project designed to improve inclusion and active lifestyles for individuals with cognitive and mobility impairments.

Online PR News – 22-April-2012 – Austin/TX – The opportunity for everyone no matter their abilities to fish in Lady Bird Lake is one step closer to reality.

The CORE Health Foundation, an Austin area disability advocacy organization, received a $150,000 grant from the City of Austin Neighborhood Partnering Program (NPP) to help fund a wheelchair-accessible fishing pier on Lady Bird Lake.

"This project shows what we can achieve through Neighborhood Partnering: a community amenity that serves an important recreational purpose for individuals with mobility impairments and all Austin citizens. By partnering with the CORE Health Foundation, we are able to take a small amount of funding and create a large impact." Howard Lazarus, Director, Department of Public Works.

The NPP was established to develop a matching fund program to provide city support to neighborhood based organizations to advance projects of local interest on city‐owned property.

CORE Health Foundation trustee, Eric Makowski stated his excitement about the award, "Fishing is about so much more than just catching fish. It's about a bond, a connection to family generations, to the community and a connection to the natural world and this donation from the City will definitely impact and improve the Austin community."

The Austin City Council approved the construction of the fishing pier on October 14, 2010 by a unanimous vote of 7-0 following recommendations by the Mayors Committee for People with Disabilities and the Austin Parks and Recreation Board.

The NPP joins Austin Mobility, Vantage Mobility International, Austin Parks Foundation, Asian American Cultural Center, Dripping Springs Pharmacy & Lamar Plaza Drugstore, Superior Healthplan, Amerigroup, Seton Healthcare Family, EZ Corp, HEB, Austin Woods & Waters, Ranch Road Printing, Careflash, Scott & White Healthcare and other donors in sponsoring the Pier however there is still a great need for support to complete the project.

Donations can be made at http://www.corehealthfoundation.org/pier.php. There are multiple marketing opportunities available and individuals/corporations can show their support for the project by adding their names to a commemorative piece of the pier.
