Dr. Shain Cuber, a tummy tuck specialist in New Jersey, shares his thoughts about a recent study published in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery journal that suggests patients who undergo a tummy tuck have better self-esteem.
Online PR News – 24-July-2012 –EDDISON, NEW JERSEY - The main reason people undergo a tummy tuck is to have a flatter stomach. However, it was recently suggested that a tummy tuck could have psychological advantages as well, according to a study published in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery journal.
Dr. Eric Swanson, a plastic surgeon from Kansas, performed a study that assessed the quality of life for 360 patients after undergoing liposuction and/or tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, procedures to remove excess fat. 60 percent of the patients had only liposuction, while 35 percent underwent both liposuction and an abdominoplasty. The remaining patients only had an abdominoplasty.
The average age of the patients was 42 and 85 percent of all participants were women. In general, 86 percent reported an improved sense of self-esteem and 70 percent experienced an improved quality of life.
"These procedures are performed on patients who are looking to improve their body image," said Dr. Shain Cuber, a New Jersey tummy tuck specialist. "Now that there is research to prove many patients motivations, I can foresee more people opting for this procedure."
The patients who had a combination of liposuction and tummy tuck said they would do the surgery again and 99 percent said they would recommend it to others.
An abdominoplasty is used to remove excess fat and skin in the abdominal region. One continuous incision is made below the bikini line to tighten the muscles and bring them together. The purpose of liposuction is to remove areas of localized fat around the abdomen area. The result is a tighter abdomen and smaller waist. Recovery time can range from 10 days to three weeks.
"People who are not happy with the way their mid section looks should consider these procedures, as they can transform the mind and body," said Cuber, whose partners offer facelift surgery in New Jersey and fillers such as Botox and Restylane.
