Stephen Howard, former Academic All American was invited to testify before Knesset – Israel’s legislative branch of government, similar to Congress in the United States – and spoke to the Committee on Education, Culture and Sport about the importance of sport and education.
Online PR News – 10-August-2012 – Dallas, Texas – Former NBA and college basketball standout Stephen Howard – who works as a college basketball TV analyst for ESPN and NBA studio analyst for the Oklahoma City Thunder – participated in an educational trip to Israel with the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) from July 30 to August 7.
The NBRPA, the only Association comprised of NBA, ABA and Harlem Globetrotters alumni, traveled to Israel as part of a working partnership with the American Israel Education Foundation (AIEF). Joining Howard on the educational mission were Stephen Bardo, Dr. Dick Barnett, Kenny Battle, Willie Burton, Joe Barry Carroll, Cedric Ceballos, Dale Ellis, Spencer Haywood, Marvin Roberts, Danny Schayes, Sedric Toney and Sam Vincent.
Howard, an Academic All-American at DePaul University, drew from his own life experiences to provide insight to Israeli youth regarding the relationship between education and sports during the mission. In addition, Howard was invited to testify before Knesset – Israel’s legislative branch of government, similar to Congress in the United States – and spoke to the Committee on Education, Culture and Sport about the importance of sport and education.
“As a former professional athlete, as well as the son of two educators, I have a unique understanding of how sports and education work hand-in-hand to help shape a well-rounded person and it was rewarding to share my life experiences during our trip to Israel,” Howard said. “After playing professional basketball in Israel, I had always wanted to go back to explore the rich history and various cultural influences, but by being able to speak to children and testify before Knesset exceeded my expectations."
