THE JOSE CUERVO PRO BEACH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIERS SETS STAGE FOR ALL-STAR WEEKEND
Top-Seeded Women’s Teams and Lower-Seeded Men’s Teams Clinch Eight Open Spots Per Gender in Main Draw
Online PR News – 22-September-2012 – Huntington Beach, Calif. – Huntington Beach, Calif. – The Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series culminates this weekend with the Jose Cuervo Pro Beach National Championships, the final USA Volleyball-sanctioned event of the 2012 beach volleyball season. Set against the backdrop of the Huntington Beach Pier, a warm off-shore breeze and sunny sky opened Friday’s qualifying rounds, which included 25 Women’s and 34 Men’s teams battling for just four spots per gender in the Main Draw on Saturday and a shot at the $150,000 prize purse. Spectators swarmed the Pier to witness the historical fly-by of the Endeavor shuttle and to support a total of 37 local Orange County athletes who competed today and will be competing through the weekend.
Some of the notable hometown teams in today’s Qualifiers included No. 25 seeded Men’s team Daniel Dalanhese (Westminster, Calif.)/ Nate Hagstrom (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and No. 19 Jeffrey Carlson (Newport Beach, Calif.)/Tony Ciarelli (Huntington Beach, Calif.) who advanced to the Main Draw. Also advancing was UC Irvine alumni and Laguna Beach local Ty Loomis and Avery Drost (Redondo Beach, Calif.).
On the women’s side, the top seeded teams held off the competition to earn their spot in the Main Draw on Saturday. No. 1 seed Angie Akers (Redondo Beach, Calif.)/Brittany Hochevar (Hermosa Beach, Calif.), No. 3 Michelle Moriarty (Houston, Texas)/Kaitlin Sather-Nielsen (Hermosa Beach, Calif.), No. 5 Kelly Schumacher (Playa del Rey, Cailf.)/Tanya White (Hawthorne, Calif.) along with the “lucky losers team” of No. 8 Sarah Day (Corona del Mar, Calif.)/Michelle Williams (Carlsbad, Calif.) will continue on to play in Saturday’s Main Draw.

The action will continue with the Main Draw event beginning tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 22 at 9 a.m., as Olympians Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal, and undefeated champs Jenny Kropp and Laguna Beach local Whitney Pavlik take on an elite field of 16 men’s and 16 women’s teams in a double elimination tournament.
Finals for the Jose Cuervo National Championships will take place on Sunday, Sept. 23 with the Women’s Final beginning at 2:15 p.m. and Men’s Final beginning at 4 p.m. PT.
