Changes at the Post Office Create New Costs, New Savings for Business

Plum Grove Printers Shows Direct Mail Marketers How to Save on Their Mail

Online PR News – 29-October-2012 –The U.S. Post Office announced postage rate increases effective January 27th, 2013-- a First-Class stamp will rise to 46 cents (from 45 cents), and other classes of mail will cost between 2.5% and 9% more. But because the USPS is also offering the perks of new tracking and efficiency technology, these price hikes do not necessarily mean that marketers will pay more for mailing. Hoffman Estates, IL-based Plum Grove Printers, which specializes in printing and mailing, has partnered with the Post Office to bring these new services to medium and small business mailings -- co-mingled mail delivery with special postage discounts, and mail tracking, which maximizes return on investment.

Higher Rates, But New Efficiencies and Cost-Saving Opportunities

"Co-mingled mail" is a way to get postage discounts by reducing the workload of the USPS. When your mail is organized before it hits the Post Office -- co-mingled with other business mailings for scale, sorted by delivery route, and put into the system close to the recipient -- the Post Office saves on costs, which come back to the mailer as discount bulk postage rates.

If you mail wisely, the new cost-efficiency opportunities will greatly outweigh the postage rate increases

Peter Lineal, founder of Plum Grove Printers, explains how it works--

"Postage is the central cost of advertising by mail. When you use this system, the rate will never be higher than 25 cents per piece. Compare this to the 46 cents-per-piece first-class rate. Choosing co-mingled bulk mail delivery on a 30,000 piece mailing can save you $6,300 or more compared to first class and even saves you $1,200 or more compared to regular standard bulk mail. And because it's pre-sorted, the mail gets delivered faster, too.

"New tracking technology also promises to revolutionize direct mail return-on-investment. Every piece of U.S. mail will be required to be imprinted with an Intelligent Mail Barcode, which can track the mail through the stream to delivery. Marketers can follow every piece they mail, know exactly when their mailings will hit each home, and respond with appropriate staffing levels and cross-media strategy. Mail tracking means transparency on lost or undeliverable mail, as well as unprecedented monitoring insight and strategic foresight."

Lineal continued, "If you know exactly when your prospect has received your mailing, you can follow up at exactly the right time by telephone, email, or preferably both. This has an enormous impact on response rates-- our studies have shown coordinated multi-channel promotion increases responses anywhere from 100-500%."

"If you mail wisely, the cost-efficiency opportunities offered by the Post Office in 2013 greatly outweigh the postage rate increases."
