Martin produced artists at Capitol Records, Columbia Records with Clive Davis, A&M Records with Quincy Jones, and Philadelphia International Records with producers Gamble and Huff, to name a few.
Bobby Martin wins two Grammys
Online PR News – 11-February-2013 –Bobby Martin is the Grammy Award winning R&B producer that dominated the airwaves for nearly three decades with his signature sound. He is a legend in the music industry, and he is well known around the world. Martin’s fellow Jehovah’s Witness brothers and sisters often refer to him as Brother Martin. He is a Grammy Winner, and he’s also a humble Christian brother that likes to keep a low profile. However, Bobby Martin is famous, he is also The Granddaddy of R&B music. In the 1960’s Martin’s signature sound was compared to the Motown sound. His signature sound was called R&B, and in the 1970’s it was known as The Sound of Philadelphia.
R&B music has progressed throughout the years, but it is still R&B music. And without Bobby Martin’s classic productions and arrangements, we wouldn’t have the R&B music of today. All of the R&B artists of today, such as JUSTIN BIEBER, BEYONCE, USHER, JENNIFER HUDSON, ALICIA KEYS, MARY J. BLIGE, JOHN LEGEND, learned to sing R&B from listening to the top R&B recording artists that were active in the music industry before they were. The famous singers that you see and hear today, were inspired by other recording artists like MICHAEL JACKSON, PATTI LABELLE, WHITNEY HOUSTON, LUTHER VANDROSS, TEDDY PENDERGRASS and LOU RAWLS. Both USHER and JUSTIN BIEBER stated that this is true.
As far as Bobby Martin is concerned, his discography of platinum hit songs date back from the late 1950’s to the year 2013. Younger R&B artists often sample and produce remakes of Bobby Martin’s songs as well. A good example of this is the song “Da Butta”. WILL SMITH and LIL’ KIM collaborated with Bobby Martin by using one of his productions. Bobby Martin did not write the lyrics to the song “Da Butta”, but the music track and beat were taken from Bobby Martin’s studio recording of (Every Time I Turn Around) “Back in Love Again”, by L.T.D. This is one of maybe a thousand examples of the younger recording artists who have collaborated with Bobby Martin. GEORGE BENSON also recorded a cover of an L.T.D. song, called “Love Ballad”.
Most of us have heard SEAL, and SIMPLY RED sing “If You Don’t Know Me By Now”, which was originally arranged in the studio with Bobby Martin. However, the younger R&B recording artists of today have kept Bobby Martin’s music alive as well. KANYE WEST sampled “Show You The Way To Go”, he used Bobby Martin’s recording of THE JACKSONS. This has kept Bobby Martin in the loop, and he is respected in the music industry today. Martin’s classic productions are heard on radio stations around the world, and he is presently working in the recording studio on new songs to soon be released in 2013. He is a producer, arranger and composer that can do almost any kind of popular music. He is referred to as the Granddaddy of R&B, due to the fact that he is a pioneer and founder of R&B music.
His discography of platinum and gold records is almost overwhelming. You can find pieces of Bobby Martin’s discography scattered around on the internet if you search online. And although Martin is indeed one of the most accomplished, and successful music producers in the world, he has managed to maintain his privacy. Paparazzi and press do not harass Martin daily, they have an understanding, and a high level of respect toward him and his wife. But don’t let Producer Bobby Martin’s humility fool you. He is a famous music producer, an exemplary role model, and a Jehovah’s Witness. And after producing hit songs at Capitol Records, and A&M Records in Hollywood with Quincy Jones, he miraculously keeps a low profile.
Many Christians of different faiths debate as to whether or not it is possible to work in the entertainment field while maintaining a Christian lifestyle. Martin’s success in the music industry has broken the stereotype that Jehovah's Witnesses do not participate in any of the arts. And while some non Jehovah’s Witnesses may crack harsh jokes about Jehovah’s Witnesses, the actual members of the Jehovah’s Witness’s faith are showing that they are normal people that don’t harm others. In fact, some of the most prolific icons in entertainment just happen to be Jehovah’s Witnesses, like PRINCE, KATHERINE JACKSON (Michael Jackson’s Mother), SERENA and VENUS WILLIAMS, GEORGE BENSON, LARRY GRAHAM (Drake’s Uncle), RONNIE LAWS just to name a few.
Jehovah’s Witnesses are happy and joyful people that want to live a clean life. Yet they enjoy music, as long as it is clean music. Jehovah’s Witnesses dance at their gatherings, and they all sing songs to Jehovah at all of their meetings. One of Bobby Martin’s fans, Camille Szalma, had the opportunity to take a photo with Bobby and the Latin Music legend “TITO PUENTE”, at a celebrity mixer. Surprisingly, Camille Szalma just happened to be a faithful Jehovah’s Witness herself, also showing that Jehovah’s Witnesses represent some of the music industry’s fan base. Jehovah’s Witness’s purchase music and they enjoy live performances.
It seems that Bobby Martin has broken the stereotype of Jehovah’s Witnesses, while setting a platform so that others can perceive the truth about Jehovah’s Witness’s. Martin has set a good example for other Jehovah’s Witnesses and for non Jehovah’s Witnesses. He has even collaborated with many of his Christian brothers that are known in the entertainment world, such as THE JACKSONS, GEORGE BENSON, LARRY GRAHAM, JEAN TERRELL, BENNY GOLSON, HUBERT LAWS, ROBERT “BIG SUNNY” EDWARDS, PHIL TERRY, GRADY TATE, PRESTON GLASS, LEN RON HANKS, SHARON MCMAHAN, and many others.
Bobby Martin is best known for arranging and producing the music of the top icons in the music industry including MICHAEL JACKSON, THE JACKSONS, QUINCY JONES, WILL SMITH, CLIVE DAVIS, WHITNEY HOUSTON, PATTI LABELLE, DUSTY SPRINGFIELD, LOU RAWLS, HERB ALPERT, THE BEE GEES, BILLY PAUL, JEFFREY OSBORNE, L.T.D., LARRY GRAHAM, THE MANHATTANS, HAROLD MELVIN & THE BLUE NOTES, TAVARES, DON CORNELIUS, THE O’ JAYS, GAMBLE & HUFF, THE INTRUDERS, TEDDY PENDERGRASS, JERRY BUTLER, NANCY WILSON and so forth.
He discovered Patricia Holt in 1960, and Bobby Martin named her Patti LaBelle. Martin wrote, arranged and produced Patti LaBelle’s first album. The name of her group was Patti LaBelle And The Bluebells. In the 1950’s Martin was a famous recording artist, vibraphonist and arranger for the Lynn Hope Orchestra, an R&B group. In the early 1950’s he was known as Robert L. Martin. He was mentored and inspired by Lionel Hampton. In the 1960’s he was extremely active in producing, and arranging music with GAMBLE & HUFF (Kenneth Gamble & Leon Huff). Most of the classic Philadelphia R&B hit songs were arranged or produced by Bobby Martin, songs like “Let’s Just Kiss And Say Goodbye”.
Although Bobby Martin and Quincy Jones started out playing and producing Jazz, both of them wound up producing R&B at the same record label. But long before Quincy Jones started producing R&B, Bobby Martin was producing, composing, and arranging music for famous R&B recording artists. In the early 1950’s Rock And Roll was acknowledged as music, but R&B didn’t exist. At a young age Kenneth Gamble was also inspired by Bobby Martin to produce R&B music, and in the 1960’s they began working on songs together. “This was not soul music”, it was The Sound of Philadelphia, and it was R&B music.
Bobby Martin, Kenneth Gamble, and Leon Huff were a close family of music executives that worked together throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s. Martin learned about Jehovah’s Witnesses from Kenneth Gamble’s mother (Ruby N. Gamble), who was a Jehovah’s Witness. Martin was later baptized with Jehovah’s Witnesses in the year 1976 in Woodland Hills, at an assembly hall where The Jackson’s would attend their assemblies. Superstar Don Cornelius had even attended an assembly with Bobby Martin. Bobby Martin conducted a live orchestra at these assemblies in Woodland Hills California, and the Jehovah’s Witness’s would sing along joyfully.
In 1976 Martin was working with all of the major record labels, top producers, and leading executives in the music business. Martin produced artists at Capitol Records, Columbia Records with Clive Davis, A&M Records with Quincy Jones, and Philadelphia International Records with producers Gamble and Huff, to name a few. Martin has produced and arranged multiple hits and has accumulated thousands of Gold & Platinum record awards. Bobby Martin is a Grammy winner as well. He won a very significant Grammy Award for the Soul Train theme song, named TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia).
