IVF specialists Dr Hrishikesh Pai and Dr Nandita Palshetkar deliver continent-hopping test tube baby
IVF specialists Dr Hrishikesh Pai and Dr Nandita Palshetkar at Lilavati Hospital have brought to life a test tube baby who trotted the globe before she was born. Baby Daniela was born to American parents, Ilona and Stan Slezinger through a surrogate mother in Mumbai.
Online PR News – 13-May-2010 – – Ilona could not get pregnant due to genetic complications. The 43-year-old is 4.1 feet tall. “Dwarf women don’t respond well to hormonal stimulation to produce ripe ova, and they have difficulty carrying and delivering babies normally because of their narrow pelvises,” said Dr Nandita Palshetkar. The Slezingers tried in vitro fertilisation (IVF) twice in New York between 2005 and 2007 but failed both times. With the favourable surrogacy laws and infrastructure that India offers, they looked zeroed in on a surrogacy agency here.
Daniela started off as a five-day-old embryo created in 2007. She was placed in a straw, which was then sealed in a cryo-cylinder and couriered through Fedex. In January 2009 the delicate parcel was couriered through a specialised Canadian agency that handles cryogenic transfers. The Slezingers picked up their baby’s surrogate mother while in the US. When the frozen embryos arrived in Mumbai after the delay, there were five of them. “Each cylinder comes with a protocol on how to thaw. It is a precise technology. The embryo is in liquid nitrogen and the technology used in this case was ‘slow freezing’ which has a much lower survival rate than the newer method of ‘vitrification,” said DrHrishikesh Pai.
After a first failed attempt with the surrogate mother, the second implantation by Dr Pai and Dr Palshetkar did the trick. It was a highly technically skilled that required the specialists to give their absolute best.
