Christmas in the summer? Megan Duckett, President of Sew What? Inc. and Rent What? Inc., premier providers of custom and rental theatrical drapes, talks about how summer is a time of planning for those important winter holiday events.
Red stage drapes are popular but silver and white are also good for holidays.
Online PR News – 19-August-2013 –While Memorial Day and the Fourth of July leap to mind when most people think of summer holidays, Megan Duckett has another take on the season. As president of Sew What? Inc. and Rent What? Inc., premier providers of custom and rental theatrical drapes for the entertainment and special events industries, summer is a time of planning for winter holiday events.
“Holiday productions actually start preparing well in advance -- typically mid-summer,” says Megan, “so when summer rolls around, we’re thinking of snowflakes and satin rather than sunbathing and siestas.”
As with any important planning, choosing custom or rental drapery for a full-scale holiday show isn’t a slapdash affair. “There are a mind-boggling number of factors to consider,” Megan points out. “Color is extremely important. Red velour drapes are particularly popular for communicating the holiday spirit. Of course, there’s the other end of the spectrum. I’ve done large-scale events featuring all snow white from ceiling to floor. This scheme is incredibly dramatic, especially if accessorized with enticing touches such as ice sculptures.”
“Anything that saves time is gold. That explains the huge demand for textiles that offer flexibility and ease of use, especially in productions that move from one venue to the next.”
“You also have to think about how lighting will impact your chosen color palette,” Megan observes. “Red is a good choice when your lighting budget is limited. Silver and white are excellent shades because they allow any color of lighting to bring out the drama of your production, and not to be overlooked for starlight scenes are ever popular Starlight LED Backdrops and LED Stardrops.”
“For the Nokia Theater, we decorated the stage with an Austrian drape in silver satin, added a silver satin swag, and giant ball ornaments,” Megan observed. “And all of it was brought to life with riveting lighting and music. Because of the intense drama and spectacle, this was one of my favorite installations.”
While visual appeal is a given, Megan points out there’s also a practical side to choosing theatrical drapery. “Anything that saves time is gold. That explains the huge demand for textiles that offer flexibility and ease of use, especially in productions that move from one venue to the next. For example, wrinkle-resistant materials such as encore velour and crushed satin are made of polyester and show well the moment they’re hung,” enthuses Megan. “With traditional cotton velour, fabrics typically must be ‘hung out’ for a couple of days prior to the event.”
To help ease the task of choosing custom drapery for an event, Sew What? offers their eSwatches fabric tool that organizes fabrics by use. Here users can view a wide variety of fabrics, with the weight, width, flame retardancy specs and fiber content for each one.
For those interested in a rental option, Rent What? offers inspirational photos of their rental drapery collections, including “Silver Satin,” “Rockin’ Red,” and “Delightably White” . For anyone staging a holiday production this year, Megan has this advice: “Absolutely plan ahead because inventory of seasonal fabrics and rental drapery is limited, and then there’s the avalanche of holiday shipping. You definitely want to start early enough to avoid the high costs of expedited shipping.”
