Online PR News – 26-August-2013 –One of the most recognizable logos on the road today is 'Percy the Puffin.' He adorns the back doors of all of Shaffer Trucking’s refrigerated truck driving jobs trailers.
The iconic symbol is easily identified with the refrigerated trailers because puffins are indigenous to the very coldest regions of the globe. The Puffin logo was originally designed by an ad agency hired by Shaffer. The name 'Percy Cargo' was given to the puffin. Percy is short for 'Persolear' which means 'to carry,' so the puffin’s full name means 'to carry cargo.' Shaffer was one of the first trucking companies to haul ice cream, which needed to be kept frozen while traveling, making it a natural tie with puffins.
There was a time when Shaffer stopped using the puffin on their trailers for cost savings purposes. During that time customers began to ask what had happened to the recognizable logo because it made the Shaffer trucks easy to spot in their drop lots. When it became apparent that the puffin logo was something that customers readily identified with Shaffer they added them back to the trailers and continue to use the logo today.
“A lot of people think Percy is a penguin,” says JR Zeigler, director of Co. Fleets, “but although puffins share many characteristics with penguins, they are a completely different species.”
Because of the easy recognition of Percy, and the clever tie with this company that offers refrigerated truck driving jobs, the puffin will always be associated with Shaffer trucks.
