Breast reduction surgery can improve women’s health and quality of life. Plastic surgeon Dr. Paul M. Parker at Parker Center for Plastic Surgery sees the national trend locally here in Paramus.
Online PR News – 24-September-2013 –A new study published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has shown measurable improvements in the lives of women who have chosen to have breast reduction surgery. Published in the August Issue of their official medical journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the study cited dramatic improvements in women's health as well as qualitative improvements in their life.
“The results of this new study reflect my own experience as a surgeon,” said Dr. Paul M. Parker of the Parker Center for Plastic Surgery. “Most often these days, we reduce the size of the breast and lift the breast through a limited incision which looks like a lollipop at the end of the procedure. The breast size is improved as is the breast shape by lifting the breast as well. Almost all patients report a significant overall improvement in their lives.”
The ASPS study was based on findings from a qualitative and quantitative questionnaire called the Breast-Q. This measures the physical and psychosocial health benefits of breast reduction surgery. The results illustrated overall improved comfort and confidence in the body, helping patients feel more satisfied with their appearance and giving them a healthier outlook on their sexual and physical well-being. Health benefits include significantly reduced strain in the back and neck and reduced breast pain. Improvements were generally experienced six weeks after the date of surgery.
“This study, combined with others on the subject, will hopefully provide the evidence necessary to justify that breast reduction procedures should be covered by health insurance,” says Dr. Parker. “My hope is that through well-documented studies such as these, as well as my support and that of my colleagues at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, we can advocate that this procedure be considered for wider coverage. Currently, many insurance plans exlude breast reduction procedures from insurance coverage.”
