Dr. Kevin O'Shea Introduces Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation™ To Monterey - Salinas, CA

“This new treatment for receding gums offers a minimally invasive alternative to gum grafting, which may encourage more people to take care of their gum recession,” says Dr. O’Shea, the first dental professional in Monterey County trained in Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation™.

Online PR News – 06-December-2013 –Monterey, CA - “Receding gums can be a real problem for people of any age,” says Dr. Kevin O’Shea, a periodontist with offices in Monterey County, CA. “Over-brushing, health problems and the normal aging process are leading causes of receding gums which are unattractive, can cause sensitivity to cold temperatures and may lead to eventual tooth loss.”

“The standard procedure for treatment of receding gums is gum grafting surgery,” says Dr. O’Shea. “While grafting remains the best option for some patients, a new minimally invasive procedure, Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation™ has been invented and patented by Los Angeles dentist Dr. John Chao. With this technique, it is not necessary to cut and transfer a section of tissue from the roof of the mouth to the affected areas of the gums. Instead, one or two tiny entry points (about the size of the tip of a ballpoint pen) are made in the gum area near the tooth or teeth to be treated.”

Dr. O’Shea uses specially designed dental instruments which are inserted into the entry point(s) and moved to loosen the gum tissues, then the gums are guided into a normal, healthy position. After the gums are in place tiny collagen strips are placed through the entry point and positioned under the gums. The collagen helps to keep the gums in place during the healing process. The treatment takes about 20 minutes to an hour or so, depending on the number of teeth treated, and up to sixteen teeth can be treated at the same time. When completed, the entry sites quickly heal and are virtually undetectable the next day, with no downtime needed for healing. “Some patients may experience mild swelling, which dissipates in a few days,” says Dr. O’Shea. “With Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation™ patients can see results immediately after their treatment is completed.”

Angela Kane, 57, just had her receding gums treated by Dr. O’Shea. “My teeth had become very sensitive,” says Angela. “I realized that I had significant gum recession everywhere and I considered having treatment, but I’m so busy at work I didn’t have time for the downtime required by gum grafting and the healing process. “When this new minimally invasive procedure became available, I had Dr. O’Shea treat the worst four teeth to begin with, and it went very well. I was just a little sore and had some minor swelling for a few days, but I could see the improvement right after the procedure and I was back at work the next day! I’m planning to have the rest of my teeth done,” she says.

A 33-month study of 43 patients with 121 gum recessions using the Pinhole Surgical Technique was published in the October 2012 issue of The International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry. The results of this study were as successful as the standard gum grafting procedure which requires cutting and sutures, while patients who underwent the Pinhole Surgical Technique reported virtually no pain, no bleeding and high satisfaction with the almost instant transformation of the defective gum line.
