Gail Jhonson Takes Home Two Black Women In Jazz Awards

First Lady of Smooth Jazz recognized for exceptional talent and stellar artistry

The First Lady of Jazz won in two categories. She was named "Best Black Female Jazz Composer/ Arranger/ Producer", and "Best Pianist/Keyboardist". Music fans around the world chose the night's winners by online voting. The jam-packed Black Women In Jazz Awards ceremony was held in Atlanta, GA earlier this month.

The Black Women In Jazz Awards honors the contributions of emerging and established female jazz artists, and professionals from related industries. The organization recognizes the work of female jazz vocalists, jazz instrumentalists, composers, producers and of the like with an annual awards ceremony, and other platforms which honor their achievements.

The First Lady of Smooth Jazz follows her own muse as she continues to enjoy a phenomenal career. In addition to being an industry-respected and fan-loved, musical artist and producer, the Grammy-nod pianist leads the all-female ensemble, “Jazz in Pink”. The band features internationally acclaimed artists such as Karen Briggs, Althea Rene, and Mariea Antoinette. Their debut CD, "1st Collection", was released in February, 2014. Jhonson also has her own band, "3 Piece Suit", and 4 CDs to her credit: "It's About Time" (1996); "Keep the Music Playing" (2004); "Pearls" (2008), and "Herstory" (2011 ). She is an educator, a Hal Leonard author of three music method books, and composer of the musicals "Overcome, Overjoyed" (ChaRo Productions), and "Philly-MOVE" (Dennis Rowe Productions ). Her movie, "Saving Grace", is scheduled for release in the Fall of 2014.
