In their latest FAQ, the writers at Online Auto Insurance discuss how being convicted of a driving under the influence charge can affect rates.

Online PR News – 08-October-2010 –Although the health dangers of driving under the influence (DUI) have been made well-known by organizations looking to combat the dangerous practice, consumers may be less aware of the auto insurance implications of a conviction. In the latest FAQ, Online Auto Insurance’s writers discuss the common repercussions.

Typically, convicted motorists will be required to get an SR-22 proof of car insurance filing, which helps the state ensure that a motorist maintains a policy for a set amount of time. The filing of this will likely result in a coverage provider’s being alerted to the DUI conviction. The Missouri Department of Health says that insurance is likely to be canceled when an insurer notices that a DUI has shown up on a policyholder’s record.

The Division of Motor Vehicles of Alaska — a state with particularly severe consequences — estimated the average cost of a first offense to be $22,000. About half of that cost, the DMV asserts, comes from having to buy a policy while having an SR-22 filing associated with them, causing rates to come in at somewhere around $2,000 per year for five years.

In Florida, motorists who were convicted of a DUI while driving with only minimal insurance will have costs rise not only because of added risk, but also because the state mandates minimum coverage requirements for DUI offenders that are much higher than for other motorists. If a driver has a clean record, he or she may only need to carry a minimum of $20,000 worth of protection. But, if he or she pleads no contest to or is found guilty of a DUI, then the required minimum amount of coverage jumps to $460,000, which the driver must maintain for three years.

The extent of the consequences varies from state to state, but a driver convicted of a DUI can surely expect to see a significant spike in his or her premiums.
