Online Auto Insurance's writers discuss what happens to a policy when an auto cross state lines.

Online PR News – 13-October-2010 –The writers at OnlineAutoInsurance.com, in their latest FAQ, discuss how traveling interstate can affect the provisions of a policy.

Getting a full grasp on the particulars of insurance and the state laws governing its use can prove to be a relatively tough feat; so it’s understandable that drivers may have some car insurance questions when it comes to the coverage implications of crossing state lines.

Since 49 states and the District of Columbia have compulsory financial responsibility laws, having a policy in place should be a prerequisite before traveling practically anywhere in the nation. What state-to-state travelers need to check is whether their policies provide out-of-state coverage for their vehicles.

Under out-of-state provisions, the coverage limits on a policy for a vehicle leaving the state in which it was insured may automatically modify to provide coverage that meets the requirements of the state that is being entered.

So say, for example, that a car owner drives his or her car from California into Nevada. If the insurance provides for only the minimum Calif. limits, then the car is only covered for $5,000 in property damage liability. But, since Nevada requires drivers to have $10,000 in this type of coverage, an out-of-state provision may automatically bump the liability limits up to $10,000.

Before setting out on an interstate road trip, consumers may want to check with an agent to find out if a policy contains such an out-of-state provision. This is especially important when drivers insured in tort states travel to no-fault states and vice versa, since these two systems require motorists to carry totally different types of protection.
