Online PR News – 19-January-2011 –The latest data released from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) indicate that the average expenditure on car insurance in Maine has remained relatively low despite the fact that the state has some of the highest minimum levels of coverage in the nation.

According to the NAIC, the average expenditure on a Maine auto insurance policy in 2008 — the most recent year for which data are available — was approximately $600. That’s 31 percent lower than the national average of $789.

What’s so surprising about that statistic is that Maine is in the highest tier for the minimum amount of liability coverage that policies must provide. Generally, coverage plans with higher levels of protection cost policyholders more in premiums.

Liability policies in the state must cover policyholders for at least up to $50,000 for injury or death to one person and $100,000 per accident, as well as $25,000 in coverage for property damage. This is commonly denoted as 50/100/25.

The only other state that has minimum liability limits that are as high as Maine’s is Alaska.
