OnlineAutoInsurance.com can help Ohio drivers secure the coverage they need and avoid harsh penalties for driving uninsured.

Online PR News – 20-January-2011 –Ohio State Rep. Matt Huffman recently re-introduced a bill that would end a random car insurance verification program administered by the state.

Since 1998, the Random Selection Program has sent out letters to auto owners who are then required to mail proof of auto insurance back to the state Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). The program was instituted in an effort to cut down on the number of motorists driving without coverage.

Those who do not respond or cannot provide proof after 90 days following the sending of the letter have their licenses suspended and must pay more than $100 in fines.

According to a report published in the Columbus Dispatch, about 5,400 letters are sent each week, with about 500 of those auto owners lacking coverage.

The Insurance Research Council has estimated that 16 percent of Ohio motorists were uninsured in 2007, and that number is expected to have risen in tandem with the rate of unemployment. The unemployment rate for Ohio in January 2010 was nearly double what it was in January 2007.

Rep. Huffman told a panel that unfair things are happening to some who receive the letters and don’t respond, according to the Columbus Dispatch. He said that in some instances residents are living outside of Ohio for a short period and then come back to find that their licenses have been suspended because of a failure to reply to the notices.

Huffman suggested that the BMV require car owners to show proof of coverage when they go to renew their registrations. The BMV says on its site that this method may be ineffective, since many would simply obtain a policy with a short coverage period before registration and then drop the policy immediately after.
