Checkered flags and championship points were the buzz phrases on each individuals mind in the pit area at the Bryant Heating and Cooling Indianapolis Speedrome® on this Friday July 15th. While the Circle City Pyrotechnics Junior Faskarts began their first ever Chase for the Cup round, the Jr Spec Indy Faskarts held their first official point paying event. The Thirsty Turtle Tavern Hornets and Hornet Figure 8’s closed in on June/July title completion. And the Indy Faskarts, INEX Legends, and INEX Bandoleros were adding valuable markers toward a Speedrome crown. Let’s get to the news.

It would be a very hard-fought evening of events for the INEX Legend division. Heat one saw Young Lion class title contender Tyler Payne victorious over Doug Greig and Eric Black. The second heat had veteran racer Mike Hacker topping Marty Griffin and Jon Watson. The 25-lap main event scrum had several caution periods during the early stages as prime real estate was at a premium. Hacker would survive as the leader during these stoppages in preparation for the final circuits. Those last few laps saw point leader Ben Tunny catch Mike. He applied the pressure, but could not get the job done as Hacker won his first career Legend feature. Griffin would bring home a solid third.

This historic first-ever Chase for the Cup night began with heat races for the Circle City Pyrotechnics Junior Faskarts. The first preliminary saw former Fall Festival titlist Brian Vogel Jr best over Thomas Skiles and Andrew Teepe. The second heat had rookie Austin Doehrman scoring a season first win over Quentin White and Caitlyn Wolfe. Rookie standings topper Cameron Wolfe bolted quickly to first place in the main event. He diced through traffic as a great battle raged for second between Vogel, Skiles, and Jordan Hahn. They traded and traded the position many times over the 20 laps. Cameron would cruise to his third feature win of the season. Skiles escaped for second with Vogel nabbing third.

Crossover temptation and intersection decision making was foremost this evening for the Hornet Figure 8 division. The first dash with danger came in an introductory heat race. That 8-lap clash was won by current point leader Nigel Peters. His consistent rival Jonothan “Captain” Morgan was second with rising star Mark Allman third. The feature began with a battle for first between Mike Fischer, Don VanValkenburg II, and Allman. As we hit midway, Peters and Morgan clawed through these contenders to vie for first place. Nigel got out front and rolled to the sweep of the Hornet feature. Morgan faded late giving a season best second place finish to DVV3. Allman would grab third at the line.

Round one of the weekend double-dip for the Thirsty Turtle Tavern Hornets saw some healthy competition for best in show. Heat one had third-generation ace Cody Shumaker besting Casey Davis and Zach Catron. The second preliminary contest was won by racing family man Don VanValkenburg II over Nigel Peters and Jonothan Morgan. The main event had Shumaker bolting to the early lead in search of his career first feature victory. Several drivers vied for the second spot before Peters became the challenger. Nigel worked on the leader and eventually slipped past for another feature victory on his incredible 2011 resume. Cody did hang on however for a career best runner-up result. VanValkenburg rounded out the race podium.

This first-ever official point’s event for the Jr Spec Indy Faskarts started with heat competition. That 8-lapper was won by Bandolero ace Randy Caldwell. Ty Riddle was a strong second followed by Dustin Kares. The feature saw Caldwell continue his dominance in taking this one for the record books. Kares came home second followed by Jeremy Johnson. A bevy of former champions and Speedrome feature winners put on a show in this Indy Faskart program. The heat race saw current Late Model and Legend division point leader Ben Tunny take the win over Matt Smith and Ryan Cherry. The reigning series king Cherry would rally late to score his division best 4th feature win of 2011. 2-time class champion Jon Wilson was second with Smith claiming third.

The INEX Bandoleros have a tight battle for the 2011 Speedrome championship underway. Tonight’s quest for points launched with heat race competition. Last week’s first-time feature winner James Kirby would continue his hot streak scoring the win over Dalton Brown and Chris Hacker. The main event had a titanic clash between Kirby and Brown. That pair swapped the top spot on many occasions during the initial 15 circuits. Trouble loomed for both in turn four with less than 2 laps remaining. Hacker would emerge from this situation to lead only the final lap for his 7th feature win of the season. Point leader Brown was the runner-up with Kirby coming away third.
