Online PR News – 20-December-2011 – – New Delhi, 20 December, 2011: Delhi-based hospitality company, Toshali Resorts International, has bagged four Odisha Tourism-owned accommodation units for management under Lease Development Agreement (LDA). All the properties are located in the Buddhist circuit of Pathrajpur, Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitgiri. Department of Tourism, Government of Odisha had floated tenders for leasing out 33 hotel properties spread across the state from private hospitality investors recently.

With this Toshali Group has made their intend clear to become a major hospitality player in the pilgrim tourism sector in the Eastern region. Toshali Group is actively marketing the Buddhist destinations of the State through its network of sales offices spread across 9 cities in India and overseas partners. “Orissa has lot to offer for Buddhist pilgrims. Our focus is to develop customized packages for tourists who come to India for pilgrimage and cultural circuit visit so that they can experience the 1000 years old Buddhist heritage of the State,” said Harihar Patra, Director-Marketing, Toshali Resorts International. To promote their products in the Buddhist market of South East Asian countries and Sri Lanka, Toshali has also acquired a Kolkata-based travel company, Pan-Asia, which has expertise in this sector.

All the four properties are within 80 km distance from airport at Bhubaneswar and are well-connected by road. Toshali Group is also constructing a 5 -star luxury hotel with a capacity of 126 rooms in Bhubaneswar to cater the growing number of business and leisure travelers to the State. Expressing concern about the limited air-connectivity, Mr Patra says, “ Despite having a vast tourism and business potential in Odisha there is a lack of adequate air-connectivity to the State. Foreign airline companies which are bringing Buddhist pilgrims to India can extend their flights to Bhubaneswar as well.”

For Buddhist pilgrims across the world, the main attraction are the remnants of the ancient monasteries spread across the adjoining hills of Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitgiri which were the campuses of Puspagiri University, an ancient seat of Buddhist learning dated back to 2nd century B.C. and which flourished until 11th century as one of the last shelter of Buddhism in India. Puspagiri is mentioned in the travelogues of the famous Chinese traveler Xuanzang, who visited it in 639 AD, as Puspagiri Mahavihara, as well as in medieval Tibetan texts. It ranks along with Nalanda, Vikramshila and Takshila universities as one of the primary institutions of higher learning in ancient India. The excavated monasteries, with Buddhist images scattered all around, and the site museum at Ratnagiri, evoke vivid memories of a bygone era and should be of great interest to anyone interested in Buddhist art and religion.

Other major attractions of Buddhist interest are the Peace Pagoda at the Dhauligiri hills in Bhubaneswar where Emperor Asoka renounced violence after the Kalinga War and the recently excavated Asokan Era Buddhist monuments at the Langudi Hills.

Toshali Resorts, which currently owns four properties, two in Orissa (Puri, Simplipal), and one each in Shimla and Goa, will now focus on lease/management contracts for their brand expansion.
