A SCULPTED JOURNEY BY DIMPY MENON

Exclusive Exhibition at Alila Jakarta from 30 November to 8 December 2012

Online PR News – 25-October-2012 – Indonesia – 03 October 2012
Guests and visitors to Alila Bangalore will not fail to be impressed by the series of bronze sculptures that adorn the hotel’s guest rooms and public spaces. These are the stunning works of Dimpy Menon, described by New York magazine Architectural Digest as one of the “biggest contemporary artists in India”.

Alila Jakarta is now delighted to bring a showcase of Dimpy’s artistry and artisanship from India to Indonesia in an exclusive exhibition at our modern Jakarta hotel (http://www.alilahotels.com/jakarta), to be held from 30 November to 8 December 2012. The “Spirit of Life” exhibition will feature 25 bronze sculptures in the lobby and public spaces throughout the hotel.

The human body is a integral focus of Dimpy’s works, often infused with a sense of positive timelessness and pure emotion. This exhibition showcase her recent works, capturing moments of graceful fluidity that convey a celebration of life, strong, resilient and filled with wonder and joy. Witness Dimpy’s remarkable ability to craft the effortless relationship and rhythm of shapes, spaces, tension and balance.

Since graduating top of her class from the College of Art, Chennai in 1986, the industrious Dimpy has had over 50 one-woman and group shows in India and overseas. She has been hailed as a “one-woman army” for her ability to handle the physically demanding process of sculpting from clay to bronze – a traditionally male-dominated medium.

Her works reflect her passion in creating large scale sculptures in public spaces that integrate harmoniously with the landscape. Among her most prominent works is a seven-foot composition in the restored lobby of the Oberoi Hotel in Mumbai, which had been badly damaged in a 2008 terrorist attack. The sculpture fittingly shows a couple with their “arms unfurled in a gesture that portrays a welcome as well as freedom”.

At Alila Bangalore, guests are greeted on arrival by the breathtaking sight of a single sculpted figure, a delicate yet powerful composition moving across the lobby from the ground to the ceiling.

Whether you are an existing fan of Dimpy’s sculptures or discovering her distinctive style for the first time, enjoy this soul-searching experience from the comforts of our elegant hotel. Jakarta’s (http://www.alilahotels.com/jakarta/rooms-suites) own Alila Jakarta presents “Spirit of Life” which promises to take you on a beautifully sculpted journey of the indomitable human spirit.
