Research reveals demand for strong leaders in the job market is on the rise

New figures have revealed that there is a need for strong and inspirational leaders to guide European businesses through the changing landscape.

Online PR News – 19-November-2012 – London – New figures have revealed that there is a need for strong and inspirational leaders to guide European businesses through the changing landscape.

The findings, from market research firm ORC International, have been released from the company’s global HR Reflections survey, which received over 1,400 responses worldwide from HR personnel across 20 different sectors.

The company found 51% of respondents in mainland ranked ‘leadership development’ 10 points above the global norm. When asked to indicate what the biggest challenges to engaging staff are, 46% indicated ‘strong, visible leadership’ – 10 points higher than the US and six points above the global norm.

The impact of financial and economic uncertainty, followed by a wave of austerity measures has clearly created a state of flux for many European organisations. HR teams have had to manage restructures, redundancy schemes and implement innovative strategies to engage and keep their talent, but the trends of continual change look set to roll on into 2013.

When asked if staff reductions were on the horizon in the next 12 months, 56% in Europe indicated it was likely versus only 38% in the UK, 34% in Australia and 20% in the US.

Continual change has created pressure on the HR function and the findings suggest industry professionals are now looking to their leaders to support them and their people through turbulent conditions to a place of stability. The three characteristics in leaders that are the most important were listed as; inspirational leadership (59%), customer obsession (42%) and competitive instinct (36%).

Phil Pringle, European Business Manager at ORC International, said: “When we work with organisations going through change on employee engagement studies, we see people time and time again looking for strong leadership at the top, but also at middle management level.

“It will be interesting to see what is revealed in the results next year, and if HR believes leadership capability has improved as an upshot from the current economic crisis.”
