Sandy Victims and Hockey Fans

The Stan Lee Foundation, a public charity promoting literacy, education and the arts across the U.S. has teamed up with NYPD Hockey and NHL Alumni for “Rivals for Relief” at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, March 24, 2013. The event will support the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts of the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City and the New York City Police Foundation. Hockey fans are invited to come watch the city’s heroes slap shot it out for a great cause when NYPD Hockey takes on an NHL Alumni team featuring former players from the New York Rangers, New York Islanders, and New Jersey Devils.
This competitive hockey game, brought to you by The Stan Lee Foundation, will also support some of our real life hometown heroes with the NYPD, with a goal to UNITE the Tri-State area bringing the community together to foster teamwork and rebuilding efforts. By highlighting the dedication that the NYPD shows to their neighborhoods, this game will honor every day working people and show their resilience in the face of great challenges. The Stan Lee Foundation proposes to celebrate and show appreciation by giving back to those who are in need and the hero citizens who have made a difference in their neighborhoods.

"The devastation of Sandy that has hit areas of NY, NJ, PA, and other states on the east coast has left many people, and some close friends, homeless and others in the dark and with no heat for weeks. We have seen people from all over the U.S. who have come together in so many ways to help one another during this hard time and now it’s time for us former professional hockey players to get together and give back," says Benoit Hogue, Stanley Cup winner. The Islanders great will be joined by Pat Lafontaine and Bruce Driver on the alumni team. “On behalf of the NHL alumni I would like to thank The Stan Lee Foundation and the NYPD Hockey Team for their support in this event.”

Other Rangers, Islanders and Devils alumni participating include: Dan Blackburn, Ken Daneyko, Ron Duguay, Jim Dowd, Pat Flatley, Vladimir Malakhov, Grant Marshall, Brian Mullen, Krzysztof Oliwa, Michel Petit and Mick Vukota. Celebrity coaches will be Ron Greschner and Ed Hospodar and the team trainer is Joe McMahon. There will be a special guest appearance by former NFL great and hockey enthusiast, Boomer Esiason.

The victors of this epic battle will take home the (soon to be) famous “STAN LEE Foundation CUP.”
“Sometimes the challenges that people face are for basic needs. We want to help our communities and continue in the efforts of rebuilding and create hope for the future,” says Junko Kobayashi, President of the Foundation.

Charlie Ventecinque, Captain of NYPD Hockey says, "Having an opportunity to give back to the community and help out the people who were affected by hurricane Sandy is pretty special. To play in a building like Madison Square Garden against players you grew up idolizing makes it even more special."

The Stan Lee Foundation will be donating 70% of the net proceeds from the Hockey Game to the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City in support of hurricane relief efforts. The Mayor’s Fund retains no administrative fee, and one hundred percent of donations are being dispersed to relief efforts and organizations. Funds will support immediate aid needs – including, food, cleaning materials and hygiene supplies – as well as long-term relief and restoration. Another 15% will be going to the NYC Police Foundation to help those in the NYPD family that have been devastated by the storm and 15% to the Stan Lee Foundation for an afterschool program for the children affected in the area.

Tickets for this event start at $25 and can be purchased at the Madison Square Garden Box Office, and
