(CORPUS CHRISTI, TX) This Motherís Day weekend, La Palmera will be the site for the Gulf Coast Humane Society as they host an adoption drive and pet information event in response to recent after-hour illegal dumping of animals and overpopulation issues at the facility. Shoppers will be able to see cats, kittens, and some dogs as well as visit with Society staff where adoption materials will be available and questions can be answered. The event will take place on Saturday, May 8, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the mallís Food Court entrance by the featured aquarium.

Currently, they are more than 200 cats presently among the Gulf Coast Humane Society's 535 animals. The facility has room for about 300 dogs and puppies in only 70 kennels, each housing two animals. And, there's no room for them elsewhere as animal shelters in San Antonio, Victoria, and Houston are filled beyond capacity, and people are dumping animals after hours there as well. The Societyís recent plight was well documented in last weekís Caller-Times.

"La Palmera is happy to help the Gulf Coast Humane Society and its many animals, and be an additional high traffic location to help spread the word about the need for local adoption," says Fred T. Walters, General Manager of La Palmera.

Also, shoppers can drop donations including dog or cat food, cat litter, newspaper, towels, litter boxes, bleach, dog and cat shampoo, collars and leashes, food bowls, treats, blankets, laundry detergent, and office supplies such as pens and copy paper, during the La Palmera adoption drive. Donations can also be sent to the Gulf Coast Humane Society at 3118 Cabaniss Parkway, Corpus Christi, Texas 78415 or by calling (361) 225-0845.
