Dr. Karron Power Says Major League Baseball Drug Scandal Hurts Legitimate Hormone Therapy

“Maybe now that we’re getting better at catching the athletes using drugs, we can get on with treating people who could benefit from hormone replacement,” says Dr. Power.

Online PR News – 24-June-2013 – San Francisco, CA – San Francisco, CA - “As drug testing has become more prevalent, athletes have become more skilled at avoiding detection,” says Dr. Karron Power, a San Francisco area physician who specializes in hormone replacement therapy. “Hormones are only so tightly controlled to keep them out of the hands of athletes, but that policy hurts people in need,” she says.

The Major League Baseball investigation into whether a now-closed clinic in the Miami area gave about 20 players performance-enhancing drugs continues. ESPN reported recently that MLB may seek 100-game suspensions for players who may have received the drugs.

“Altered anabolic ‘steroids’ are easy to detect and have therefore become less prevalent; while testosterone, identical to what is naturally produced by the body is much more difficult to detect, and therefore more widely used,” says Dr. Power.

Dr. Power says that millions are spent each year in an attempt to curb performance enhancement drugs amongst athletes, yet the vast majority of use probably still passes under the radar. “When a test does come back positive it’s headline news: a new drug scandal,” she says.

“For example, testosterone is a prescription medication that, when used correctly under a doctor’s supervision, can provide great benefits to men with low testosterone production,” says Dr. Power. “It is also a highly controlled and regulated medication, due to its potential for abuse amongst professional athletes. By limiting the number of prescriptions doctors write, the supply of testosterone for illegitimate use is limited. Unfortunately, men with a legitimate medical need for testosterone replacement therapy pay the price in limited availability and higher costs. In addition, media attention on these pro-sports steroid scandals casts testosterone therapy in a poor light, discouraging men who could truly benefit from treatment from seeking it.”
