Online PR News – 10-July-2013 – Codicote, UK – Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, has been shortlisted in the ‘Workforce Efficiency’ category of this year’s Health Service Journal (HSJ) Efficiency Awards. SMART e-Rostering and time and attendance have been implemented across 3,500 managerial, clinical and non-clinical staff, delivering significant cost savings and improving work/life balance across the Trust. The HSJ Efficiency Awards look to champion innovative and cost-effective measures which reduce costs while maintaining the highest standards of patient care.

Tracey Preece, Deputy Director of Finance at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust (GHNFT) says “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for such a highly prestigious award and now look forward to going through the judging process. SMART really has made a difference to the way in which we can ensure that our staff are working the right hours, being rewarded properly when they work more than their allocated hours and most importantly, that we can quickly and easily ensure we have the right amount of cover on our wards and departments to ensure we can deliver high quality, safe care to our patients.”

Tristan Spencer, director, SMART, A Kronos Solution stated; “Reaching this stage of the HSJ Efficiency Awards recognises Gateshead’s success in boosting efficiency and improving the work/life balance for its many employees in tough economic times. It also proves how technology can help NHS organisations in the UK achieve the best patient care with optimum management of resources. The SMART workforce management solution helps Gateshead manage and automate processes to enable effective deployment of staff with the right skill mixes required for front line services. It supports the adoption of new workforce management practices to achieve the Trust’s goals.”

The SMART auto-rostering and time and attendance solutions are now used to manage staff deployment in operating theatres, with improved allocation of shifts against contracted hours and absence management. The system manages a complex range of fixed and flexible shift patterns covering acute 24-hour services, Monday-to-Friday services, and those that require extensive out-of-hours availability, including highly complex, high dependency areas such as critical care and theatre units. Automation has saved many hours of resource, now released back to patient care and any inaccuracies or discrepancies are identified and captured quickly, helping managers to act swiftly and avoid payroll errors.
