'Saying Grace' Among Iconic Rockwell Paintings in Online Gallery
Online PR News – 28-February-2014 – Atlanta, Georgia – In the past few months, a few pieces of Norman Rockwell’s classic American artwork have been selling at auction for record-setting bids. Rockwell’s painting that shows an elderly woman and a young boy praying in a crowded restaurant, titled ‘Saying Grace’, sold for $46 million at Sotheby’s auction in New York City late last year. The sale set a record for a single American painting.
The gallery at Mini Masters’ online store features Rockwell’s ‘Saying Grace’ and currently 46 other paintings by the artist. This includes the popular paintings ‘Rosie the Riveter’, ‘The Problem We All Live With’, and the ‘Four Freedoms’ series.
Other paintings such as ‘The Gossips’ and ‘Walking to Church’ were also sold by the descendants of Kenneth J. Stuart, the art director of ‘The Saturday Evening Post’. The record-setting painting hung in Stuart’s office at ‘The Saturday Evening Post’. ‘Saying Grace’ went to auction due to difficulty affording the insurance and upkeep of the painting.
As an iconic American, Rockwell is often remembered as the illustrator of ‘The Saturday Evening Post’, where he captured Americans in their day-to-day lives. 58 years have passed since ‘Saying Grace’ debuted on the Thanksgiving edition of ‘The Saturday Even Post’.
He was originally paid $3500 for ‘Saying Grace’ (equivalent to $31,500 in 2014’s dollars, accounting for inflation). The popularity of the cover painting for ‘The Saturday Evening Post’ lead to the piece of art becoming a long-term loan at the Norman Rockwell Museum. ‘Saying Grace’ was exhibited at twelve other museums in the United States up until its auction in late 2013.
Over the span of his career, Rockwell managed to complete a good number of paintings. No single painting is the same as another; anyone can take delight in his work and be humored by his portrayal of the American spirit.
