Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth Marks the 449th Anniversary of the Founding of St. Augustine

Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park presents a day of celebratory events marking the 449th anniversary of the founding of St. Augustine.

Online PR News – 29-August-2014 – St. Augustine, FL – On Saturday, September 6, 2014, beginning at 9 a.m, Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park presents a day of celebratory events marking the 449th anniversary of the founding of St. Augustine.

Throughout the day, the public is invited to visit an authentic 16th century encampment featuring the Historic Florida Militia and the Men of Menendez portraying the original soldiers and civilians who founded the city.

At 10 a.m., a waterfront cannon barrage salutes the landing of Pedro Menendez de Aviles. At 1:00 p.m., sixteenth century re-enactors will march in a Grand Procession from the South end of Magnolia Avenue to the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park.

Once in the Park, the Grand Procession will circle the perimeter of the Park and then settle in to reenact the First Thanksgiving Dinner in the U.S., which occurred in 1565 at the present site of the Fountain of Youth. Fifty-five years before the arrival of the Pilgrims in New England, Spanish colonists sat down with Native Americans for a Feast of Thanksgiving on this very spot! The feast ends at 3:00 p.m. and will be followed by demonstrations of 16th century Spanish military and civilian life through 5 p.m. Beginning at 1:00 p.m., a cannon volley will be fired and repeated on the hour at 2:00, 3:00, 4:00 and 5:00 p.m.

A delicious highlight of this year's celebration is the First Annual Founder's Day Taste Fest at the Fountain of Youth Park. Beginning at 12:00 noon and lasting until 4:00 p.m., the Park's 3,000 square foot Events Pavilion will come alive with a wide range of flavors from some of the area's finest restaurants and organizations, including the Kingfish Grill, Juniper Market, St. Augustine Maritime Heritage Foundation, and the Five Flags Cafe. The offerings will include dishes ranging from traditional sixteenth century fare to dishes prepared with today's vibrant flavors.

Beer, wine, soft drinks and cold water will be available.

Standard Park admission rates apply - St. Johns County Residents get a 50% discount from non-resident rates!

In addition, the Fountain of Youth Park will offer 10% off the purchase of Annual Passes all day long.
